Most people are wandering through their training. The purpose of each of the training packages and products is the same - to give direction, and reach realistic performance goals.
Intensity Base Training
The training works on the principle of raising lactate threshold levels to increase performance. In proper sequences, effective threshold training can be done in very little time. Time efficient training takes in account work and family schedules, and sport specific strengths and weaknesses. Everyone is different, so in custom schedules, your individual training will reflect, what you need most to build on your current fitness level.
Rick Niles has a Master's degree in exercise physiology, and has been a top age group triathlete since 1983. His training system began with the fatigue and frustration of 20 and 30 hour training weeks. Looking for a better way, he found that shorter workouts can accomplish more. He has authored The Self Coach's Performance Manual ( Self published 1993) which has served as an outline of training principles presented in his training camps, and Time Saving Training ( Human Kinetics,1997). His training articles have appeared in Bicycling, Runner's World, Inside Triathlon, Triathlete and Triathlon Sports in Australia. He has been coaching athletes at all levels of abilities for the past twelve years. He is a USAT certified Level II coach, and has served on the USAT coaching commission. Outside of triathlons, Niles enjoys sailing on San Francisco Bay, skiing and spending time with his wife Diane, and sons, Kevin and Jack.
A few comments from some athletes
I wanted to thank you for all your support and training advice. I could not have gotten a PR for this race with out your coaching. I used your principles and had my best bike ever. I could harldy train on the run because of a neuroma in my foot, so , per your book concentrated on the bike for cross over fitness. I spent minimal time in the pool and got through the swim with out dying or being completely waxed. Given mynew job, family, my wife's outrigger racing/training, I am so stoked on being able to finish an Ironman, let alone post a respectable time. 216 out of 1500 competitors and 45th in age group 35-39. thank go I am aging up later this year.
Ever coming down to Orange County? Also, where are you based? i am spending more time in SF and would love to buy you dinner and beers for your coaching. Most of my friends still can't believe my results with your system, but I love it and tell everybody who wants to know all about it.
Take care and thanks again for your support, training and coaching.

I just did my first race after reading your book and using Performance Progress Plus.
It was the best one ever. I was passing people like crazy on the run and I have never done that before.

Thank you for your help in preparing me for the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. I completed it in good form and under four hours as my first triathlon thanks to your book on time efficient training and your software schedules. With 3 kids under eight yrs. and a 60hr/wk job, seeing the workout on the wall every day helped get me to fit in the training. I trained for four months and (except for a few painful cramps) had a really enjoyable and exciting race. I owe you one!

I interviewed and did research on a number of coaches. Then I read the cycling article in the sample Newsletter on your website.
I improved my bike time on the same 20 mile course by 15 minutes just by trying the things you said in the article. That's why I chose you as a my coach. Your training works !
